Dear Friend:
In my last Pastor's letter we were studying the teachings of Jesus in His first sermon given as the Messiah. We must assume it is a very important message to mankind, His introduction to His creation, spoke directly to mankind as the Son of God. They should have a considerable impact on our lives as the children of God; an impact as great as when He spoke to the nation of Israel from atop of Mt. Sinai. There He gave the Ten Commandments, the rule on how to live. Here He gives the rules on how to apply His laws on how to be a Christian.
He begins with the fact we should be humble to attain the Kingdom of God, then continued saying we will have much tribulation in order to reach the Kingdom. Yet, through that tribulation we will be comforted. The next guide to Christian living is we must be meek when dealing with others in this world. "Blessed are the meek, For they shall inherit the earth." Matt 5:5. The word meek is much better thought of not as just humble, but is probably best said as someone who is gracious to others yet strong in their conviction of the truth. They will be the leaders in the Kingdom as the vanguard of the new world tomorrow. Someone who is strong yet balanced in dealing with others.
Another attribute a Christians must possess is the desire to live by every word of God. "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled." Matt 5:6. We must desire to do the work of God so we will be filled with all the spiritual gifts to do that work; a work that God has called us to that produces the pleasures of life forever and a desire that surpasses physical hunger. Our food should be first and foremost doing the will of God. The disciples urged Jesus to eat after He finished talking to the women at the well. "In the meantime His disciples urged Him, saying, "Rabbi, eat." John 4:31. He responded with a interesting statement, But He said to them, "I have food to eat of which you do not know." Therefore the disciples said to one another, "Has anyone brought Him anything to eat?" Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work." John 4:32-34.
I remember as a ministerial trainee riding with the pastor to visit the brethren. We stopped at his house so he could have lunch. For lunch he stood at the kitchen counter to grab a quick bite to eat so we could move on to the next appointment. He turned to me and said, "get use to this Ron, you will have to eat many meals standing at the kitchen counter." "Do you not say, 'There are still four months and then comes the harvest'? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest! And he who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. For in this the saying is true: 'One sows and another reaps.' I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored, and you have entered into their labors." John 4:35-38. I have found after serving the Living God and His people for many years that no truer statement has been spoken.
We have been called to serve now and in the future; an eternity of joy that surpasses all understanding. We have been filled with the gifts of the Spirit that magnify the natural physical gifts given us. We can never run away from those gifts that are so sorely needed in God's Church today. We have been blessed to be called to serve God with the only goal that matters in life. Service that will carry us into eternity, an eternity of activity in the greatest family that will ever exist, a family unlike any that has existed on this earth; a family that will bring joy forever.
In the service of Christ, Ronald W. Laughland Ronald W. Laughland Pastor
